Eight Function Chart

The Eight-Function Chart

John Beebe’s eight-function, eight-archetype model pushed back the frontiers of consciousness research by specifying which of Jung’s eight mental functions are in shadow for each of the sixteen personality types, and how they manifest. The Beebe model can show you your shadow side, both the good and the bad. It can help you see a trajectory of development on your path of individuation, and it can also help you distinguish the mask of personality from the core of character in others you meet along the way.

Each of the eight functions  tends to manifest with a particular emotional energy in each type code, indicated by the archetypes at right (see Beebe Archetypes Explained). Together, the function and its archetypal energy form what can be called a function-archetype.  The combination of eight archetypes with eight functions for each of the sixteen types produces sixty-four possible iterations of personality.

To discover how this affects your type, see Shumate’s Projection and Personality Development via the Eight-Function Model, 2021, Routledge.

The numbering does not imply a developmental sequence, nor does it imply frequency of use. Also, there may be unconscious aspects of the four preferred functions, just as there may be conscious aspects of the four non-preferred functions.

“Remember: the shadow that you can see is usually not the shadow.
