Testimonials
“I probably read 100 books a year. (I know that makes me a very polygamous reader). I really can’t tell you how much I like your book. I will be reading/rereading it for years to come. You did such an incredible job making an intimidating topic accessible. I’m sure you know that INTJs would really struggle to offer false praise.” – Sandra Yaklin (INTJ), PhD, APRN, PLLC
“I’m loving your book so far, even though I’m only on page 40. It’s so rich with insights and detail, and it ties so many things together so well. And you’ve already persuaded me that Jung was an INTP, not INTJ as I previously believed, which I didn’t think was possible! And I love the tables … I’ve been referencing them a lot. You’ve done the psychological type community a HUGE favor with your truly amazing book.” – Bill Solomon (ISFP), Vice President of Finance, Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute
“Wow! I just finished reading your book and the tables at the end. Amazing. I truly enjoyed it and found it very illuminating and instructive. Reading the tables and other descriptions of the types and functions, I find that they are incredibly consistent with what I have observed with myself, friends, and certainly clients that I have worked with regarding type.” – Kevin Kell (ENFP), Pacifica doctoral candidate and clinical psychologist
“I’m just taking a break from reading the book to chime in here. But I only got it yesterday and I can’t really put it down. I honestly experience it as one of the best books I’ve ever read. … Dr. Shumate’s book … establishes a foundation for a deeper exploration of Jung’s model by many communities. One point I would clarify is that some of the tables in the back represent Carol’s work integrating the input of many type professionals in workshops she and Bob McAlpine ran. To my mind this is a great strength of her book—it’s less about her own viewpoint, although that’s included, but she steps back to provide space for Jung, Beebe and the MBTI community to speak their wisdom. I feel greater confidence in reading her book because it builds upon the past 100 years instead of sweeping that all aside and telling us how it all really is based on her opinion. We’re lucky to have her professional scholarship—as an example and for the content.” – David Pool (INTP), MSc, Pacifica doctoral candidate
“This morning I was re-reading some of the tables in the back of your book and thinking about how Einstein “distrusted his vision” by fudging the numbers when he first calculated relativity theory. This opposing personality (Ni) for extraverted intuitives (Ne) is spot on, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s, in a way, caused by the “order of things” that we define culturally and societally. … All this to say, THANK YOU for the profound effect this [material] is having on my life and authentic personality.” – Nicole Brooks (ENTP), Pacifica doctoral candidate
“Projection and Personality Development via the Eight-Function Model by Dr. Carol Shumate (2021) is a crucial contribution to psychological types scholarship. The narrative is illustrative and offers useful examples, such as the in-depth look at former President Lincoln’s life. Most brilliant are the charts contained within pages 178-250. Shumate (2021) did an incredible job of distilling Jung’s (1921/1976) seminal descriptions into useful and easy-to-navigate tables. The variety of ways in which the typological material is organized is helpful to digest the massive and multi-layered theory piece-by-piece.” – Amy Bucciarelli (INTJ), Pacifica doctoral candidate and art therapist
